Do you know about the glycemic index of food you are eating?

You have heard often that you should not eat sugar, white rice and many other food items in excess as these foods will lead to diabetes. Even diabetic patients are often told to avoid these foods to keep sugar levels in check. Have you tried to find out the logic behind this?

Let me clarify to you as this will help you to choose your food wisely.

The carbohydrate-rich foods are classified on the basis of Glycemic Index (GI), a scale that ranks how fast these foods after eating are going to raise your blood glucose level.

High glycemic index food: Raise your blood sugar quickly and pressurize your pancreas to release insulin. May ultimately lead to insulin resistance and diabetes.

So, avoid them if you are prone to diabetes or take in moderation and opt for more healthy options.

Examples: White rice, Potato, Cornflakes, Sweets, Sugar and sugar based item, Refined wheat products like white bread and Maida

So, the trick is to avoid white. Avoid excess white rice, maida and sugar

Low glycemic index food: Slow and gradual increase in blood sugar will make your pancreas happy.

Examples: Barley, Oats, Quinoa, Pulses, Dairy products, Fruits and vegetables

Opt for these healthy options and you will find out the difference.

Disclaimers: I recently switched to low glycemic index food and I can notice differences in a few months.
