In a previous blog, I discussed the amount of water to be consumed.
In this one, we will discuss ideal timing and methods to consume an appropriate amount.
Best time to drink water
- Morning hours: j, lukewarm water can be consumed. It will rehydrate your body after sleep and also cleanses your gut. This will also help in constipation.
A half slice of lemon with 1 spoon honey ( if not diabetic) can be added to lukewarm water. It will help in increasing your basal metabolic rate and may help in reducing weight.
- 30-45 minutes before meal: This will help in digesting meals by preparing the stomach for meals.
- 1 hour after meals: It will help in movement of digested food from stomach to intestines.
- Before and after exercise: Always carry a water bottle during exercise or outdoor games. You lose a lot of water in the form of sweat during exercise and you need to replace it adequately.
- Before bed: A small glass of water at bedtime keeps you hydrated. Avoid large amounts, as it will lead to waking up from sleep for bathroom visits.
Time to avoid drinking water
- Large amount immediately before meals: It will dilute your digestive enzymes and interfere with proper digestion of food.
- Large amount immediately after meals: It will prevent good mixing of eaten food and digestive juices leading to improper digestion.
- Large amount immediately before bed: It will affect your sleep quality by frequent visits to the toilet.
Best practice for drinking water
- Room temperature or lukewarm water: Avoid too hot or too cold water. The best way to drink is at room temperature or light warm.
- Small sips at frequent intervals: Avoid drinking large amounts of water at one go. Better to do sipping at frequent intervals for good absorption.
- Add lemon or green tea: If you feel it is difficult to drink adequate amounts of plain water as per requirements, then add lemon or green tea for flavour. Remember, avoid adding salt or sugar in this as it will lead to dehydration or sugar spikes.
- Make a water time table or use a water alarm: You can schedule a fixed timing in a day when you will drink water or you can use reminders or alarm in your phone to remind you.
