Mr. Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram assumed office as the 23rd President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on July 24, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is a heroic freedom fighter, a distinguished sportsman, a brilliant army officer and an experienced politician. He is well known at home and abroad for his unique contributions and notable achievements in all his related fields. From being a professional footballer in the 1960s to assuming the duties of Speaker of the National Assembly in 2026 and most recently as the 23rd President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, his long career is a unique example of unwavering commitment, wisdom, determination and public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early life and education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was born on 29 October 1944 in Lalmohan, Bhola district, into a prominent Bengali Muslim family. His father, Dr. Azhar Uddin Ahmed, was an influential political figure and a member of the Pakistan National Assembly. His mother, Karimunnesa Begum, was a housewife. Hafiz Uddin Ahmed received a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Political Science from Dhaka University in 1965, which laid the foundation for his later political career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contributions and achievements in sports<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before embarking on a military and political career, he had achieved particular fame as a footballer and was recognized as one of the most talented players of his time. As a dynamic forward, he played for several top clubs, including Mohammedan Sporting Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He represented the Pakistan national football team from 1967 until Bangladesh’s independence in 1971. At the international level, he played matches in Iran, Turkey and Myanmar. He won the 100-meter and 200-meter sprint records for the then East Pakistan between 1964 and 1966. His exceptional speed and competitive sportsmanship made him a prominent figure in South Asian football. In recognition of his contribution to football, FIFA awarded him the Centenary Order of Merit in 2005 , one of the most prestigious awards in world sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Military contribution to the Bangladesh Liberation War<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hafiz Uddin Ahmed showed deep patriotism in the great war of independence of Bangladesh in 1971. As a commissioned officer in the Pakistan Army, he actively participated in frontline battles in various strategically important sectors, especially Sector No. 8 and under the ‘Z’ Force during his tenure as a Captain. On 30 March 1971, he declared a mutiny against the Pakistan government at Jessore Cantonment as an officer of the East Bengal Regiment . At that time, he fought against the Pakistani army for about eight hours and came out of the cantonment with two hundred soldiers. For his outstanding bravery and war tactics, he was awarded the third highest military medal of Bangladesh, ‘Bir Bikram’, which established him as a distinguished freedom fighter. His great sacrifice played a major role in achieving the country’s independence. On 15 December 1971, after a day-long battle under the ‘Z’ Force led by the then Major Ziaur Rahman, he captured Sylhet city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political career<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Hafiz was first elected as a Member of Parliament from Bhola-3 parliamentary constituency in 1986 and later joined BNP in 1992. During his parliamentary career, he won the 3rd (1986), 4th (1988), 5th (1991), 6th (1996), 7th (1996), 8th (2001) and 13th (2026) National Parliament elections as a Member of Parliament. In his political career, he joined the BNP party positions and standing committees, which reflects his special status in the party. Later, he was elected as a member of the highest policy-making forum of BNP, the ‘National Standing Committee’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a minister, he has successfully served in several important ministries, including Minister of State for Commerce (1996), Minister of Water Resources, Minister of Commerce and Minister of Jute (2001-2006), and most recently, Minister for Liberation War Affairs (2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2026, he was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 13th National Parliament of Bangladesh. As Speaker of the National Parliament, he presided over the sessions of the National Parliament to conduct parliamentary business and led the country at a crucial juncture in the democratic development of Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personal life and ideology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dilara Hafiz, a prominent educationist, was the wife of Hafiz Uddin Ahmed . Dilara Hafiz served as the Principal of Dhaka Eden Women’s College and Shaheed Suhrawardy College and as the Director General (DG) of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education. Dilara Hafiz died on 28 March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is the father of two sons and a daughter. Son Shahrukh Hafiz is a computer engineer by profession and Taharat Hafiz is a businesswoman and daughter Shamama Shahreen Hafiz has completed her MBA from the University of Windsor, Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Hafeez is widely recognized for his sense of discipline, military discipline, political experience and integrity in both his personal and sporting life. He is a staunch supporter of the original spirit of the war of independence and has always been vocal in favor of a strong democracy, institutional accountability, national development and the rule of law. His clear position and candid view on contemporary issues have established him as an ethical politician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hafiz Uddin Ahmed’s career is a vast canvas of success in various fields: he is a FIFA – certified footballer, a freedom fighter with the title of Bir Bikram, a decorated military officer, a seven-time elected member of parliament, an experienced minister, and a distinguished speaker of the National Assembly. His current tenure as President and his distinguished career spanning over six decades demonstrate his commitment to national progress and a unique blend of personal excellence and public service in Bangladesh’s democratic evolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
